There is nothing more awesome, more fascinating, and more wonderful than knowing that we were created with incredible possibilities and potential Regardless of one’s position or perspective regarding the origin of the human species, one thing is certain, and to this everyone must attest; human beings are far more fascinating, complex, and intelligent than any other creature on the earth. Although it is true that humans share some similar biological and physical characteristics with some animals, the human capabilities and potential are way beyond the limits of any earthly creature. It has been found, for example, that about 98 percent of human and chimpanzee deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) are similar. What does this mean though? It means there is a whole lot of biological similarity between humans and animals. From this it is not difficult to see why some believe that we may have evolved from them. But how do we explain such similarity? Simple, in Genesis we are told that man’s body was formed from the same material as other animals were. In this case, we must expect that there would be some very close biological similarities between us and them. This is the reason why biologically or physically we are just as dependent on the nutrients and produce of the earth as they are. This is not rocket science. However, a careful observation will show that although the human brain contains profound similarities with the brain of some animals, it differs in many ways. Let’s examine three of these differences; namely, capacity, complexity and potentiality. No one can deny that the human brain is far more powerful than the brain of any animal. For example, unlike animals, our brain is wired to learn, develop and change over the course of a lifetime. Our brain has the capacity to reorganize itself in response to learning and experience. This is called neuroplasticity and extends even into old age. This means even at an advanced age a person is still capable of learning and change.

In addition to capacity, the complexity of the brain is puzzling to scientists. They continue to be amazed at how the brain with its hundreds of millions of networks carries out its myriad of fascinating tasks with astonishing efficiency. There are parts in the brain that are responsible for planning, thinking, feeling, movement, perceiving, and a host of other things. What is interesting about all of this is the fact that there is such profound precise coordination between interconnected neural networks and brain regions. Scientists now believe that the human brain may be more complex than the known universe itself. This is because the possible neural connections that can be made by the over 100 billion neurons in our brain are literally inconceivable. Scientists believe the possible neural connections that can be made in the brain may be more than the number of stars in the known universe. This is astounding! However, this makes perfect sense when one understands that God created humans to have dominion over the works of his hands.

The next is potentiality. No one really knows what the human mind is truly capable of. Its potential and capabilities continue to marvel scientists. Because the brain can extrapolate, visualize, imagine and conceptualize, there is just no telling the extent of its potential. Whatever it can visualize given time it can accomplish. Its full potential therefore cannot be measured, calculated or even imagine by human means. There is literally no human instrument or scale that has been developed that can measure the full human potential or capabilities. The more scientists study the human mind, the more mystery it unfolds and the more fascinating it becomes. In fact, the more we study the mind the more we realize how little we know about it.

In addition to the three primary areas of difference between humans and animals, there are also differences in several other areas. First, unlike animals, we have motives for our actions. While a dog is drawn into a mating experience with a female dog as a result of the pheromone she releases, a man may have several reasons for being attracted to a female beside biological. Second, we can feel guilty for failing in our responsibility and justified for actions deem to be right or good. Third, there is that part of us that appears to reach out for a sort of non-tangible experience beyond that which can be encounter through our sense experience. These experiences include such things as meaning, purpose, and inner connectedness, which appear to be profoundly unique to humans. Fourth, we can reason, extrapolate, determine the best course of action based on careful consideration of given alternatives and their possible consequences. Finally, we have a variety of emotions all of which at some level are connected to our thought life. Can you imagine a big angry dog coming at you and then deciding at the last moment not to hurt you because it just remembered that if it hurts you it will be put down (killed)? These are just some examples of the differences between humans and animals.

In the book of Genesis we are told that God breathed into man the breath of life or the spirit essence, something from his own being. This means humans are move by more than mere biological drives. The spirit within each of us in combination with our neurological/biological design is responsible for our amazing capacities and incredible potential. Therefore, we should not be distracted by mere biological similarities with animals; we should be more concern about the capability and potential of the design itself. Coming to grips with who we really are and what we are capable of doing is a necessary first step toward understanding our incredible design, our purpose for being, and the Creator who is responsible for it all.

Mothers, Abortion, and North America’s Future

As we approach Mother’s Day in the U.S. and Canada this year, I find myself thinking of my mother’s unselfish concern for my sister and me. It causes me to recall my family’s first winter in Alaska when I was a very small child.

We found ourselves stranded by bad weather in our cabin for several months, as our food supply dwindled dangerously low. Wild game was also scarce because of the weather. The situation became so serious that our provisions were nearly gone except for some smoked fish, raisins, popcorn, and a little flour. My mother ground the popcorn, mixing it with flour and water to make pancakes. readmore

What about the Children?

imageWhen does life begin?

Contrary to popular thought, there are a growing number of people, who believe the scientific and biblical evidence that life begins at conception. The Bible clearly shows that life begins at conception.  In Jeremiah 1:5, God speaks to Jeremiah saying, “I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born, I set you apart and appointed you as my spokesman to the world.”   In Psalms 139:13-16 David records his conversation with God. “You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex!  Your workmanship is marvellous- how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion... You saw me before I was born. Everyday of my life was recorded in your book.” Readmore

images/stories/zamba.jpgA young lad by the name of Michael Duku was a student of unusual brilliance even in his earliest school days. He lived and went to school in war-torn Southern Sudan.

When the extremist Islamists from the north of Sudan invaded their own predominantly Christian south, they were on the look-out for youngsters whom they could set aside as promising young scholars and train them in special schools for the particularly gifted. Michael was one of those chosen, together with another young lad of his tribe.

As they were transported over two hundred miles, they were told they would be enrolled in a school for specialized training for future service to their country. Readmore
